Sridevi: The first lady superstar in Indian cinema

Sridevi started her career at the age of six with the Tamil movie ''Nam Naadu''. The film was well received by critics, and it helped her to fetch a chance in the Malayalam film ''Kumara Sambhavam'' in the same year. In ''Kumara Sambhavam'', young Sridevi enacted the character of Lord Muruga, and with impeccable screen presence, she mesmerized the Mollywood audiences. In 1975, she made her debut in Bollywood as a child actress with the movie ''Julie''.

She made her debut as a lead actress in the movie ''Moondru Mudichu'' which starred Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan in the lead roles. The film became a massive hit at the box-office, and it was the actress' first step towards stardom.

Later, she appeared in a handful of Tamil movies including ''Gayathri'', ''16 Vayathinile'', ''Sigappu Rojakkal'', and ''Priya''.

In 1981, she won the Filmfare award for her performance in the movie ''Meendum Kokila''. Later, in 1982, she played the character of a patient with amnesia in ''Moondram Pirai'' which fetched her the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress.

Sridevi became the heartthrob of Bollywood audiences after the release of ''Himmatwala'' alongside Jeetendra in the lead role. The film became a blockbuster, and it affirmed Sridevi's star value among Bollywood audiences.

In 1987, ''Mr India'' was released, and the complete show stealer in the movie was none other than Sridevi. At those times, many people had said that the film's name should be renamed as ''Miss India'' as it was Sridevi who carried the movie on her own shoulders.

Sridevi took a hiatus from acting after her marriage in 1996.

A grand comeback and unexpected demise

After six years of hiatus, Sridevi returned to the Industry with a bang through the movie ''English Vinglish''. The film became a huge success at the box-office, and the initial collection figures revealed the Bollywood audience's never-ending love towards the actress.
