India has seen a surge in foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) over the last year. According to a report released by the Ministry of Tourism, the number of FTAs this year has seen a significant increase when compared to last year.

As per the report, the number of foreign tourists this January was 10.66 lakh. The numbers were low last year. In January 2017, the FTA count was 9.83 lakh and the year before, the tourist count for January was 8.45 lakh.

The growth rate in FTAs this January over last year was 8.4 percent, compared to 16.4 percent in January 2017 over January 2016.

India recorded a surge of foreign tourist arrivals from neighboring countries like Sri Lanka and Bangladesh as well as countries like United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.

The percentage share of Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) in the country last month was highest at Delhi Airport, which recorded 28.03 percent arrivals. This is followed by Mumbai Airport, which recorded 17.47 percent, Haridaspur Land Check Post covered 7.63 percent while Chennai Airport saw 7.17 percent. Goa recorded 6.19 percent while the neighboring Bengaluru Airport recorded 5.16 percent.

Kolkata Airport recorded 4.81 percent while down South, Cochin Airport recorded 3.77 percent. Ahmedabad Airport recorded 3.01 percent while Hyderabad Airport recorded 2.56 percent.

This January, approximately 2.40 lakh foreign tourists entered the country through eTourist Visa. Last January, the tourist count was 1.52 lakh, registering a growth of 58.5 percent.
