A makeover can completely transform a person and help to develop confidence and self-esteem. There is a saying ‘clothes maketh a man’, which is not completely untrue, but a makeover is much more than just clothes. It is supposed to bring out the best in a person and help to achieve goals in any field.

What is a makeover?

A makeover is a transformation in the way you dress, your hairstyle, makeup, and accessories. However, it does encompass the right attitude that goes with it and the ability to carry a particular style that suits your personality and profession.

A makeover is best left to professional stylists, but most common people do not have access and the money to afford it! That does not mean it is impossible to bring new aspects to your life. If you have been dressing well and appropriate for your professional life, it does not mean that you don’t need a makeover. In fact, every person needs to reinvent a different part of their personality or make it better to their best advantage. In the internet world, where opinions are formed quickly, an average person with average looks has very little time actually to grab attention. The makeover also requires a proper investment of money or correct management of personal finance to help you buy the right things that complement your personality.

What are the essential points to keep in mind for a makeover?

A makeover starts with inner alignment and the right shift to better perspectives. This means that you first need to evaluate what your goals are and the right attitude that you would need for it. For example, if you are planning to get into the sales and marketing field, you would need to work on spoken English, dressing style, grooming, and mannerisms.

  • Dressing style: The proper frame of mind is essential along with comfort level. No one can dress like others because every individual has a different body type, height, and color. Fashionable and expensive clothing is not the only way to bring about a makeover. Try out different outfits, colors and designs to find out which flaunt your personality. You can take a trusted friend or family member with you who might give you an honest opinion about this. But, most importantly, don’t wear something that you are not comfortable with! Buy clothes that do not make your physical features like short height more obvious. If you are short, don’t wear long Kurtis that will make you look shorter. If you are on the heavier side and short, wear close-fitting trousers, jeans or leggings at the ankle.
  • Grooming: While women can resort to a bit of makeup for enhancing their features, men have no such privilege. However, for men, grooming is essential which involves a proper haircut with the right length that suits your hair type too. You can use styling products for your hair. For men, investing in a good shampoo is as important as buying a good conditioner. Most men believe conditioners are to be used by women only! If your hair is rough and dry, you need to condition and use a styling product like a cream or gel. Nails should be cut every week, and haircut should be done every 2 – 3 weeks, depending on your growth to maintain a certain hairstyle. Moisturizers and lip balms are not for women only. Your face is the first thing that a person can see. Having dry skin or oily skin is certainly not an option. Apply a face scrub once a week to remove dead skin cells and impurities. If you sport a beard and mustache, invest in some trimmers to keep you well-groomed and neat.
  • Makeup: Women need to wear makeup that is subtle for everyday office life. Keep it to the minimum. Indian women usually like to wear kajal or kohl, but it starts smudging in the hot sun and humid weather. Use a smudge-free kajal to work. Black eyeliners are strict to be used on the upper eyelids and for evening events. For the daytime smart look in office, you can wear a brown eyeliner or eye pencil, and mascara applied gently. Wear lipsticks in neutral pink and brown shades, but if you are on the dusky side, try out a few colors on your hand with testers before you buy any. Dark lipsticks are for special occasions only and not for office. You can use a CC or BB cream instead of a foundation. But a moisturizer and compact powder in a suitable shade can be used too. Use a light-toned blush to flatter your face. The mantra here is, less is more when it comes to makeup.
  • Hairstyle: A smart and non-fussy hairstyle is best for office. A ponytail, bun or a hair clip is more suitable than leaving your hair messy. Especially during hot weather, hair tends to become dry, frizzy and unmanageable, if not tied up properly. A shampoo and conditioner are essential to keep you from having a bad hair day. When you are working in a corporate world and juggling responsibilities also as a homemaker, there is hardly any time for yourself and your hair. Keep the length of your hair at a manageable level in a way that you can maintain it. If you have curly hair, use a detangling product to comb your hair quickly. Better still, keep a short hairstyle that you can manage every day. Not everyone can afford to go to a salon to color their hair professionally. If you are coloring your hair, shorter hair would also mean easy application and maintenance of hair color. The hair color should be in a shade that matches your hair color. You can add highlights to your hair, but not in copper or red tones as this would look more like college type and is inappropriate at your workplace.
  • Jewelry, accessories, and shoes: Accessories should blend with your overall outfit. You don’t need to purchase a different thing for every outfit. You can always find a neutral pair of earrings or chain and pendant to go with your dress. A pair of cufflinks is not too old fashioned for men, because they have limited options when it comes to jewelry. That does not mean they cannot wear a ring or two, but obviously, one cannot wear a 20-gram gold ring to your office! Invest in a good pair of high-quality shoes and a good belt that goes with all kinds of trousers. A black belt is the safest bet here! You can also do online shopping if you have a really busy schedule!
  • Attitude: Last but not the least, your attitude is everything. Makeovers are all about self-realization from a certain perspective. You will meet all kinds of people in an organization. Keep your conversation to a minimum and try to listen more to what others have to say. This will help you understand better before you give an opinion about something and it will make you look well-informed! You may have all the right things for a makeover, but if you don’t have confidence in your abilities, talent, and intelligence, then it can’t help you. Everybody cannot do everything. There is always something that we can do better than others. Appreciate what others can do better than you, learn from them, but keep working on your skills too. This will give you plenty of confidence to face any tough corporate meeting! Best of luck!
