A 28-year-old man is behind bars for raping an eight-month-old infant in New Delhi. The infant has suffered severe injuries in her genitals, is undergoing multiple surgeries. Her condition is critical, the doctors said.

According to reports, the mother of the accused man was babysitting the infant. Her son, on the pretext of playing with the child, took her away from his mother and carried her to another room. To ensure that her screams are not heard, the man gagged the baby to prevent her from crying and raped her.

The baby’s mother, a maid, returned home that night and spotted injuries in the baby’s genitals.

Her daughter was crying in pain. The mother immediately rushed her to Kalawati Saran Hospital, where the doctors are treating her.

The police arrested the child's cousin, who initially denied his involvement in the sexual assault. The accused later confessed to the crime and is now behind bars.

Sharing the horrific incident on Twitter, Swati Maliwal, chairperson of Delhi Commission for Women, tweeted, “How can Delhi sleep today when 8 month baby has been brutally raped in Capital?”
