The Supreme Court on Monday issued an order, extending the March 31 deadline of linking aadhaar (India’s UID or unique identification number) to bank accounts and mobile phone numbers. The apex court, however, has not specified the new deadline. Many, who supported Aadhaar, were disappointed with the court’s indefinite extension. The advocates of Aadhaar opined that linking of UID to mobile phone numbers and bank accounts is in the welfare of the Indian citizens. An Indian citizen on condition of anonymity pointed out the benefits of a single ID system.

“Aadhaar should be linked to bank accounts, and it's high time our country has a single identity proof system. Why should an Indian citizen have multiple IDs like pan cards, voter ID card, ration card etc?” he asked.

A user of Twitter, who was disappointed with the apex court’s decision, pointed out that linking Aadhaar to mobile numbers was a good decision, but SC ruined it. “Now anyone can buy new sim on anyone's ID and misuse it,” the user tweeted.

“How can one see progress in a country where SC judges make a mockery of the justice system. The Supreme Court is more interested in putting government policies on hold,” said another user on Twitter.
