An eight-year-old Asifa Bona was raped and murdered in a temple in Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir. Reports claim BJP-backed lawyers are attempting to stop the charge-sheet from being filed. This has sparked outrage across the country

Rahul Gandhi, president of the Indian National Congress, who was silent on the issue, finally weighed in.

Taking to Twitter on Thursday, he asked how anyone could protect the perpetrators of such evil. He said that Asifa case is a crime against humanity and it will not go unpunished.

“What have we become if we allow politics to interfere with such unimaginable brutality perpetrated on an innocent child?” he posted on Twitter.

Meanwhile, reports claim that Rahul Gandhi will lead a midnight vigil at India Gate for Asifa. “A very welcome move after unfortunate prevarications of Congress until now on Kathua Rape. Please also disown local Congress leaders who backed the rapists. I am glad the candles are coming out #JusticeForAsifa,” tweeted Barkha Dutt, an Emmy-nominated reporter.

Celebrities like Sonam Kapoor and Sania Mirza have condemned the Kathua rape and murder case.
