Update long overdue

The latest version of the OS has been named MIUI for the Redmi 1S while the update for Redmi Note is MIUI

Post the update for Note 3, Xiaomi has begun rolling out MIUI 9.2 for the Redmi 1S. However, it is interesting to note that the basic framework of the OS is still based on Android KitKat. The update also includes the Android security patch which was released in October 2016. However, it does not feature the latest Android OS updates and therefore don’t be surprised if you cannot find some features which are present in the latest updates.

Interesting new features

The latest update for Redmi 1S brings along a number of new features which included a simplified and easy user interface, more pleasing layout, and simpler readability of searches, more robust blocklist rules with the possibility of autonomous and independent rules for different SIM Cards.

Other add-ons include better display formats, improved app searchability in the Dual App settings.

The most recent OS update, MIUI 9 is based on the Google Android Nougat platform. One important addendum is the three different customized styles of notification- Multiple Styles, Bundling Notifications and Quick Replies. The introduction of Split Screen feature enables the user to run two apps simultaneously on one phone.

The update also includes a new Smart Photo Editing which allows the user to enhance the features of the picture.

Update to cover all devices in a short time

The update also boasts of an augmentation of battery usage and a better Battery Saver Mode.

Other features like Security app, Dual App setting, Bluetooth setting, Mi account and Mi Drop have all been augmented. The update is being rolled out in phases to the complete range of smartphones from Xiaomi in the coming days.

The size of the update is around 202 MB. Therefore before pressing the start button, do ensure that your phone has appropriate storage space. Xiaomi has said that it will not be the last update and revealed that a security patch is due by the end of February to take care of the KRACK security vulnerability.

To remind readers the Redmi 1S boasts a 4.7-inch HD 720p display with Dragontrail glass protection. The device is powered by a 1.6GHz Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor and is complemented by Adreno 305 GPU and 1GB of RAM.

The smartphone is powered by a 2,000mAh battery and runs on the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box, which was updated to Android KitKat.

Different OS for mainland consumptions and international versions

Xiaomi has developed the MIUI firmware for its smartphones and tablets and is based on Google Android platform but has been heavily customized. Since Google and the chinese Government are at loggerheads and many Google services banned in the mainland, it was imperative for Xiaomi to evolve its ecosystem to conform to strict Chinese rules. However, it does not have to follow these strictures for its overseas operations, and it features the usual Android Firmware with its modifications.
